Warren BarnesManaging Partner of Kernutt Stokes LLP in Eugene, Oregon, was elected chair of AGN International - North America, Inc. (AGN-NA), at the North American Board of Directors meeting October 27, 2015 in Vancouver, BC, held in conjunction with the AGN International, Ltd. World Congress.
Barnes has served on the AGN-NA Executive Committee continuously since 2006, and previously chaired the Board in 2010. He is only the third Board member in AGN's 40-year history to repeat as Board chair.

Barnes' second term occurs during an unprecedented time of change for AGN's North American region.

"The association experienced a major transition in mid-2014 when Malcolm Ward was hired as the Global CEO; our long-time Executive Director, Rita Hood, has announced her retirement effective May 31, 2016," Barnes said, adding that "I'm glad to be able to assist and support both of these transitions to assure seamless member service and collaboration in the North American region of AGN."

As AGN-NA Chair, Barnes will preside at meetings of the North American Region's Board of Directors and Executive Committee beginning January 1, 2016. He succeeds Gary Katz, Managing Partner of Logan Katz, LLP of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, who has served as chair for the last 12 months and will become Immediate Past Chair.

Also elected to AGN-NA's 2016 Executive Committee are the following:

Carl Coburn, Vice Chair (Managing Partner, Clark Schaefer Hackett, Cincinnati, OH)
Carol Villemaire, Treasurer (Managing Partner, James Moore & Co. P.L., Gainesville, FL)
Bradley P. Lusk, Secretary (Managing Partner, Sisterson & Co., LLP, Pittsburgh, PA)

AGN-NA currently has 43 firms as members of the North American region, including 38 CPA firms in the US, 3 firms in Canada, and one firm in Mexico. It is part of AGN International, Ltd., which has 180 member firms in 86 countries, and is considered one of the leading associations of accounting firms in the world. World headquarters are in London, UK city center, and the North American headquarters are in Denver, CO.

Kernutt Stokes was founded in 1945 and joined AGN in 2004. The firm is currently one of Oregon's largest single-office accounting firms. Barnes joined the firm in 1992 after serving for five years at the national firm in its Washington, D.C. office. He holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree from Brigham Young University.

In addition to his firm management responsibilities, Barnes leads the delivery of tax consulting, compliance and management advisory services to a number of Kernutt Stokes clients. He advises closely held corporations, partnerships and individuals on issues related to financial planning, estate and gift planning, federal and state tax compliance and tax consulting. While he has experience working with clients in a broad range of industries, he currently focuses on businesses in the transportation, retail, manufacturing, and professional services industries.

Barnes is active in his family, church, and community and also finds time to be an avid cyclist, swimmer and University of Oregon Ducks fan.

AGN created a Staff Exchange Program whereby AGN member firms may send their talented staff overseas for a temporary work assignment, and for AGN member firms that wish to accept such temporary staff.

• Foster the exchange of best practices, knowledge, and skills throughout the association
• Provide member firms with a means to develop  staff skills, expose them to new ways of working, motivate them, and ultimately assist them to reach their full potential
• Special assignments for projects requiring knowledge of local legislation and/or language of the staff person's home country
• Opportunity to attract and retain best staff (similar to opportunities available in Big 4 firms)

More information available for Members Only. Go to, scroll down the Members-Only home page, and click on the links in the Staff Exchange Program box.

Increasing business has been a major theme of all the 2015 AGN regional meetings (NA, Europe, Asia/Pacific, Central & South America, West Asia & Africa) and the Vancouver World Congress. To that end, the AGN International office has created a Business Development section in the Members-Only area of the website: (Route: My AGN / AGN Knowledge / Business Development)Here you will find support and training to help you increase your effectiveness in proposing for new work, along with diagnostic questionnaire tools.

A Business Opportunity Bulletin (BOB) has been created and sent out regularly to start focusing on commercial conversations among members, and provide you with materials to forward to your clients (where appropriate) showcasing your international thinking and credentials. Take a look at the series so far: (Route: My AGN /  Latest Updates box / click on the BOB of your choice).

Within each issue is a section for sharing the content of the bulletin with your clients using your own firm branding. You must include a legal disclaimer to the communication; you may use the one shown in the bulletin or your own firm's disclaimer.

The AGN-NA staff celebrated Patsy Bowen's 25th anniversary by taking her to the Lumber Baron Mystery Mansion for an evening of fun on December 12, 2015. The evening began with an hour of "casino" fun and playing blackjack or Texas Hold'em. Patsy learned a bit about Texas Hold'em and even won a few hands. Too bad it was only play money!

Then guests made their way to the third floor for the interactive dinner theater "Let's Kill the Whistleblower." Several staff members were pulled from the audience to participate on stage: Mark Pigg was the spokesperson for our table in deciding "who done it" and solving the murder. Courtney Mino was cast as a Board member of Charity Action Saving & Helping (CASH). Rita Hood assisted the magician, and Steve Radel (Nathalie Champagne's husband) was called upon to play the Fat B****** character from Austin Powers. Patsy was one of the backup singers for a rewritten version of the song All About That Bass. A fun time was had by all!
